Finally!
Becky and I had a "discussion" yesterday morning - I wanted to come home from juries and water the trees. This spring we have planted a boatload of trees, mostly to replace some we've lost. We had an early order from the Forestry department that included pecans and loblollies to the tune of about 50 seedlings. Then, about a week ago, the Forestry department had a sale - yay! we got some Shumard and Burr Oaks and 15 Ponderosa Pines which we planted this week...that is in addition to the number of trees we have already placed over the years.
What I've read is that when planting new seedlings, they need water every day for about two weeks, then start tapering off. I have been horrible about doing that (I'm stingy and I hate paying water bills, so I haven't been as generous with the water as I should be. But we had a well put in this winter and I'm no longer stingy with the water!) but have decided to turn over a new leaf and start watering more frequently. So I wanted to come home and water the trees. But, no, we're supposed to get two inches of rain this weekend, so why should I water? Because my firm belief is that if we're scheduled to get rain and I don't water, we don't get rain. Hence, the "discussion" yesterday morning, and I caved. We got home, planted the last five trees and went out on the town. When I woke up this morning at 3:30, no rain.
But, finally, around 4 a.m. it started. Now, I doubt we'll get the promised two inches, as the weathermen have a grand bent toward exaggeration, but we've had enough that it'll be a couple of days before the trees need watering...phew, finally!
